John retired as Deputy Chief Fire Officer in 2005 after 32 years service in five different fire authorities. He has since been working with a number of public and private sector organisations including a major outsourcing company as its senior Fire Consultant. John has provided consultancy support for major fire related projects including the provision of fire and rescue services to Airbus (UK) Ltd and project management support to the Irish Government. Other contract work on behalf of G4S has included Exeter Airport, Guernsey & Alderney airports, Ford, BAE, Corus tubes, the Justice department, Cable & Wireless and the MOD.
In the public sector environment John has assisted numerous fire and rescue services on specific projects, for example, when Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service reviewed their performance management framework and subsequently developed of an Effective Managers Programme, covering all roles from Crew Manager to Brigade Manager.
John has experience in developing successful bids for PFI projects, for example, a project to develop a joint training centre for the fire authorities in Avon, Gloucestershire and Somerset. His work included developing an Outline Business Case, writing output specifications, developing the public sector comparator, appointing financial, legal and technical consultants, achieving PFI credits from the Treasury and eventually appointing the preferred bidder.
